When people ask me what I do, and I say I’m a “Software Engineer”, they seem impressed yet not entirely sure what it means. Even my friends still can’t quite grasp what it is I do. They know I’m good with computers and useful for any technical issues they have. So, for both their sake and yours, I’ll attempt to describe what happens in a day in the life of a software engineer working for Educater.
6:30 am – Wakeup
My eyes open and leap out of bed, ready for the exciting day ahead! Check my emails to make sure everything is working.
7.30 am – Head to Work
Heading to the office takes me through the fabulous Lincolnshire countryside and over the iconic Humber Bridge, this journey takes me around 50 minutes on a good day!
8.30 am – Arrive at work
Make the coffee, switch the laptop and monitors on, then check for urgent emails. The latest project we are working on is integrating Microsoft Power Bi into our custom project, this has been a fun challenge. If you need any help with locking down row level security to individual accounts give me a call!
12 pm – Lunch
It’s normally a tossup between the local sandwich shop or a 10 minute walk to Sainsburys (getting my steps in). While eating lunch I check the news, but it’s hard to switch off fully when you have code open!!!
1 pm – Back to Work
Check emails, look through our Bug tracking software and catch up with the other developers to check progress. Once this is done, I get my head back into ‘coding’ I am currently working on a new setup wizard for our software package, this will enable new customers to start with Educater within minutes!
4:30 pm – Home Time
Time to head home and hopefully miss any traffic around the Humber Bridge, the drive helps unwind with the picturesque views. Thornton Abbey is always a great place to visit if you have the chance!
5:30 pm – Dinner
Time to cook dinner, yesterday’s delight was prawn curry, rice, and nan bread. After dinner I generally go on a cycle around the local area (getting even more steps in).
9 pm – Learning Time
This usually consists of widening my know knowledge base. Yesterday I repaired a CD player for my dad. Working on a small Python project, it’s a break out game all for the purposes of learning how Python works!!
11.30 pm – Bed Time
Amazon Prime for a few hours to wind down.
And of course, my day wouldn’t be complete without my must haves:
- Visual Studio 2022 with Resharper – a must have!
- SQL Management Studio
- PostMan – for testing web requests
- Microsoft Teams – for team communications
- Microsoft Outlook
- Fenix Web Server, allows me to turn any folder into a website (locally) for testing that code rather than uploading the code or moving it to IIS to test
- ClipboardFusion – allows me to keep a history of my copy and paste to recall anything I’ve ever copied at any time useful for storing code snippets
- My PC – Intel i7 Dell XPS , 16GB Ram, 5760×1200 Resolution, Logitech M570 Wireless Trackball
